POWERS, VANDERHOOF LEAD MCPHERSON

TOPEKA – Despite losing two of the all-time best swimmers to graduation, the McPherson boys swimming team never missed a beat on Tuesday as they traveled to Topeka and dominated the Topeka West Invitational by winning the team title, placing seven of the top eight individual scores and taking first in eight of the eleven events they participated.

The Bullpups ran away with the team title by rolling up 495 points, 119-points ahead of second place Topeka Hayden. Other schools swimming were Junction City, Bishop Miege, Osawatomie/Paola, and Topeka West.

Individually, Matthew Powers and Rhys Vanderhoof tied with Gabriel Lamb of Junction City for the most individual points with 40 each. Powers won the 200 and 500 Freestyle while swimming a leg on both the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay champions, while Vanderhoof joined Powers on both the relay wins and still had time to win the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Butterfly.

McPherson won all three relays as Logan Ediger and Cody Achilles were also part of the 200 Medley Relay win, while Tytus Reed joined Powers, Vanderhoof and Achilles in winning the 200 Freestyle Relay, while Reed, Logan Ediger, Alex Houston and Wesley Wurm combined to win the 400 Freestyle Relay.

The other individual winner was Ediger in the 100 Backstroke.

“The Bullpups had a chance to really shine at a much smaller meet than we are used to seeing at the Hummer Sports Park Natatorium, our usual arena for the state championships,” explained Bullpup Head Coach Matt Cotton. “Historically we have swam well here, and tonight was another exceptional performance. Our ‘A’ relays were able to grab gold in all three events, and the Bullpup swimmers consistently locked out the top of the platform, taking first in all three of the events.”

Speaking of individual swimmers, Coach Cotton continued his reflections by saying, “(Rhys) Vanderhoof and (Matthew) Powers both put up new state qualifying swims, and we had several new consideration cuts. I was also impressed with some of our newer guys, who had a chance to race in a fast pool and were knocking seconds off their personal records’ left and right. Christian Garcia, a freshman, missed out on his first medal in the 100 Breaststroke by only a few seconds. Also of note, Logan Ediger secured his first individual gold of his high school career with a huge swim in the 100 Backstroke.”

Besides Powers and Vanderhoof in their three-way tie for first in individual scoring, the next five top individual scorers were all from McPherson as Logan Ediger placed fourth, and the trio of Cody Achilles, Tytus Reed, and Wesley Wurm all tied for fifth while Alex Houston placed eighth.

Coach Cotton concluded his post swim reflections by adding, “We were still adjusting to the new realities of COVID swimming, but tonight the Bullpups looked comfortable and confident in the water. These smaller meets give us the chance to really stand out and showcase what we can do, and tonight was a great example of that.”

Next up for the Bullpup swimmers will be the Wichita Heights Invitational on Friday, December 18.
