BRUMBAUGH, HAZELWOOD, PRIDDY LEAD SMOKY VALLEY

By William

Lindsborg – The Smoky Valley girls basketball team continues to impress on the hardwood as they rolled out to a big early lead and never looked back on their way to a 29-point, 56-27 victory on Friday at home over Concordia.

With the win, the Lady Vikings are now 3-0 on the season.

“We came out with the intention of pressing the Panthers and the game plan worked,” pointed out Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “We opened up a first quarter lead and never looked back. This is the third straight victory to open the season. The pressure defense along with efficiency on offense opened up a commanding lead and running clock the entire fourth quarter.”

Smoky Valley jumped on Concordia in the first quarter with an 18-6 lead before stretching it out to a 20-point, 34-14 advantage heading into the halftime break, before cruising in for the final 29-point win.

Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings with 16 points which included going four-of-five from the three-point line while also grabbing four steals on defense. Adrian Hazelwood also reached double digits with 13 points while both Breanna Priddy and McKinley Johnson chipped in with eight with Priddy leading the team in the paint as she grabbed 10 rebounds.

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his reflections on the win by adding, “We planned to apply defensive pressure from the start and get out and run, and the girls executed it extremely well. I was proud of how we were able to defend without fouling and then work the ball around on the offensive end. We knew that Concordia was a team we matched up well against, but also had the possibility of looking ahead to next week’s opponents. Our girls came out with intensity from start to finish and the final margin showed it.”

Next up for the Lady Vikings will be on Tuesday, December 15 when they go on the road to battle with Hesston, before they finish the pre-Christmas break schedule with a home matchup on Friday with Halstead.
