ELYRIA – Once they settled down after the first quarter, the Elyria Christian girls basketball team played consistent basketball and scored a five-point, 36-31, home court victory on Thursday over Rural Vista.

Elyria struggled a bit in the first quarter as Rural Vista took a five-point, 9-4 lead before the Lady Eagles bounced back to deadlock the game at 17-17 going into the halftime break.

In the second half, Elyria outscored the visitors by one-point in the third and four points in the final quarter of play to gain the five-point win.

“This was a great win for our team against a very solid Rural Vista team,” exclaimed Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “I felt like we came out a little timid in the first quarter, but after we settled down, I was happy with the consistent defense we played and then we found some rhythm in the second quarter offensively, and that gave us some confidence at going into the half.”

Team wise, the game was evenly played as Rural Vista held a slight advantage on the boards with 27 rebounds to the Lady Eagles 25, had 10 assists to Elyria’s nine, while defensively the Lady Eagles dominated as they forced Rural Vista into 31 turnovers, including making 19 steals on the game.

Kylee Penner lead the Lady Eagles in scoring with 17 points while she also blocked three shots and gathered in five rebounds. Ryland Hawkinson had another solid overall game with seven points, seven rebounds, 2 blocked shots and four steals. Olivia Peters led the team in swipes with seven steals while also gathering in seven rebounds as well.

Speaking of his players, Coach Fields continued his reflections on the game by adding, “Olivia (Peters) and Allie (Stone) were outstanding tonight on defense as they combined for 11 steals. They forced a lot of turnovers as well that did not show up on the stats, and the whole team did a nice job of getting them to speed up. Kylee (Penner) did a great job of finding her shots around their six-foot-one post. She is really starting to slow down on offense and see her opportunities better.”

Coach Fields concluded his reflections by talking about his team overall, saying, “This has been a team that we have really struggled to score against over the years. We missed a lot of free throws and layups tonight that could have given us a comfortable margin in the fourth quarter. I am hoping our girls will continue to gain confidence and finish our easy looks.”

With the win, the Lady Eagles are now a shiny 5-1 for the season as they have a quick turn around with a Friday night game at home against Smoky Valley Homeschool to close out the pre-Christmas part of their schedule.
