MOUNDRIDGE – To close out the pre-Christmas schedule, the Moundridge girls basketball team took battle at home on Thursday with Wichita Independent as part of the Heart of America League/Central Plains League Challenge and the Lady Wildcats came out on top 44-25.

Moundridge took an eight-point, 11-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and still had a seven-point, 22-15 advantage going into the halftime break. The Lady Wildcats put some distance in the game in the third quarter by opening up an 18-point lead as they cruised to the 19-point victory.

“In the game we were able to get out to their shooters quickly,” noted Lady Wildcat Head Coach Vicky Kessler. “Then I changed us to a 1-3-1 zone, and we struggled to get to the perimeter and Independent hit four three-pointers. In the second half we went back to a 2-3 zone and everyone did their part getting on their shooters and back into the paint. The third quarter was the best we had played all year both offensively and defensively. I am so proud of the team’s effort. I had the team run some clock in the fourth quarter to keep the ball away from their high-powered offense, Independent hit seven three-pointers.”

For the game, the Lady Wildcats connected on 40% of their shots from the field as they went 18-of-44 while they held Independent to making just 24% of their attempts at 9-of-37. Moundridge also held a sizable advantage in the paint and on the boards where they outrebounded Independent 27-17.

Kate Eichelberger led the Lady Wildcats as she recorded yet another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Erin Durst had a strong game and joined her in double digits on the scoresheet with 13 points of which several came on layups after making one of her seven steals in the game. Kenzie Elmore helped direct the Lady Wildcat offense by dishing out four assists.

Coach Kessler concluded her reflections on the game by saying, “Offensively, we had a great effort. This was a great win for the Lady Wildcats, because Independent is an athletic, physical team and I am so proud of the entire team.”

With the victory, the Moundridge ladies are now 5-1 for the season and heading into the Christmas break. They will return to the competitive hardwood on Friday, January 8 when they go on the road to Marion.
