NEWTON – On Thursday, the McPherson Middle School 7th grade girls basketball teams played their final game of the season and scored two very decisive victories on the road over Newton Chisholm.

‘A’ TEAM FINISHES 13-2

The 7th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team closed out the season with their 13 victory in 15 games as they routed Newton Chisholm 66-7.

“These girls are athletic, tough, scrappy, smart, and skilled,” noted Head Coach Matt Sandbo. “They will get under your chin and guard you and are not afraid to get on the floor. What they lack in size they make up for with relentless pressure and savvy.”

Brooke Doile had a huge game as she put 23 points by her name in the scorebook while Ava Romero joined her in double digits with 13 and both Maryn Sandbo and Crickett Halbmaier each chipped in with eight as eight girls scored in the contest.

Coach Sandbo concluded his reflections on the ‘A’ team and game by saying, “Turning teams over and getting out in transition is their strength but over the last half of the season they really played well in the half court too on both ends. This group shares the ball, makes the extra pass, can get to the basket and finish plays while understanding spacing on the floor.”

MCPHERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 7TH GRADE JUNIOR LADY PUPS ‘A’ TEAM SCORING:

Brooke Doile – 23; Ava Romero – 13; Maryn Sandbo – 8; Crickett Halbmaier – 8; Andi Buschbom – 6; Adelynne Strecker – 4; Addysen Patrick – 2; Jasmyn Evans – 2.

‘B’ TEAM WINS BY 31

It was a complete rout, but it was close for the 7th grade Junior Lady Pups ‘B’ team as they finished their season out with a 10-2 record after hammering Newton Chisholm with a 31-point, 49-18, victory.

Talking about the ‘B’ team, Coach Sandbo said, “This group of girls all contributed and improved throughout the season and many were new to organized basketball this year. Coach Lasely did a great job with them in her first year of coaching basketball. They too are athletic and created a lot of havoc defensively for other teams.”

Addison Shaft and Kamri Shipman led the ‘B’ team in scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively while Jhaidyn Brown and Elley Paulsen each scored six. Nine Junior Lady Pups scored in the ‘B’ game.

Concluding his reflections on the ‘B’ team, Coach Sandbo added, “Overall, we were extremely fortunate to get a total of 27 games and 27 practices in this season. My hope is these kids can continue to have opportunities to play and compete.”
