KAUFMAN HITS FOR 29

By William

ANTHONY – Overcoming a sizable first quarter deficit, the Moundridge boys basketball team played consistent ball the rest of the game and pull out an overtime, three-point, 60-57, victory on the road Friday at Chaparral in a Heart of America League/Central Plains League Challenge game.

Down by 11 at 20-9 by the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats bounced back to pull within one at 30-29 going into the halftime break. Both teams played even in the final two quarters and the game ended tied at 51-51 when regulation play finished.

In overtime, Moundridge outplayed Chaparral by three points to gain the win.

“We went on the road and picked up a nice win against a very athletic and long group that played multiple defenses,” pointed out Wildcat Vance Unrau during his post-game reflections. “We did not take care of the ball early and had to rely on some solid defense to get back in it. I really like the way we attacked the paint and that ultimately sent us to the foul line a lot. Too many turnovers but in the end, we did the things necessary to get the win.”

Landon Kaufman had a monster night for Moundridge as he put 29 points on the scoreboard, helped by his making 14-of-18 free throws and netting three three-pointers. Kaufman also led the team in assists with six, grabbed a pair of rebounds and tied for the team best in steals with Corbin Unruh as they both swiped six. The Wildcats as a team stole a total of 17 balls from the host team.

Both Logan Churchill and Jon Schlosser also reached double digits for the scorebook with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Churchill hit three three-pointers, grabbed four rebounds, and made one steal as well, while Schlosser hit four-of-seven from the field, gathered in four rebounds, dished out a pair of assists, made three steals and blocked a shot.

Coach Unrau concluded his reflections by discussing where the team is at in the season and saying, “Now with the long moratorium I am concerned what kind of shape we will be in after the break. We will get four days of practice and then play. Kind of concerned about that and certainly not anything I have encountered. But I am looking forward to a little time off and I know that the boys are as well. I am so pleased that we have gotten in all of our games on the pre-Christmas schedule and hopefully that will continue into the new year.”

The win was just the second of the season for the Wildcats as they head into the holiday break 2-4. Moundridge will return to the competitive hardwood on Friday, January 8 when they host Marion.
