ANDERSON, LUNDBERG LEADS EAGLES

By William

ELYRIA – The Elyria Christian boys basketball team came into their Thursday game shorthanded but still were able to nearly pull out a win only to lose by six, 31-25, to Rural Vista.

After trailing by four, 11-7, at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles pulled within two, 17-15, heading into the halftime break.

Elyria chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 23-23 heading into the final eight minutes of play where Rural Vista then held them to just two points to take the six-point victory.

“We were very shorthanded tonight because of some illness affecting the team,” explained Elyria Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “We had mostly junior varsity kids being thrust into varsity roles and they had to learn as they went – playing at a faster pace against a bigger, stronger, longer group of players.”

Neither team could claim victory in turnovers as the Eagles turned the ball over 18 times while Rural Vista recorded 27 miscues, including 15 steals by Elyria.

The Eagles only connected on 11 of 62 shots, or just 17.7% and that included a woeful 1-27 from the three-point line.

Bret Anderson led Elyria in scoring with nine points while Dominick Lundberg chipped in with eight, no other Eagle scored more than three.

Anderson also lead the Eagles in rebounds with nine and steals with five while Lundberg recorded six rebounds with one assist and one steal. Three players, Alec Huddle, Josh Allen, and Johnny Unruh each grabbed four rebounds while Allen had three steals and both Unruh and Huddle swiped two.

Coach Goodrich concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “They all had the green light because we had to put up a lot of shots and tonight, they just didn’t fall for us. When you shoot just 1-27 from the three-point line and have 18 turnovers, it is hard to recover no matter who you are playing. Rural Vista was tough inside and played to their strengths and we did not defend well.”

The Eagles were scheduled to play Peabody on Friday but we have not received any information about the game at this point.

Beyond the game on Friday, Elyria will be off for an extended holiday break before returning to the competitive court on Friday, January 8, when they travel to Solomon.
