STONE, CLARK TOP LADY EAGLES SCORING

By William

SOLOMON – In a very low-scoring battle the Elyria Christian girls basketball team, playing without two of their top players, managed to still dominate on the scoreboard and score an 18-point, 26-8 road victory over Solomon on Friday.

The score was tied at just 4-4 at the end of the first quarter before the Lady Eagles pushed out to a 12-6 halftime advantage and then shutout Solomon in the third quarter while putting seven on the board to take a 19-6 lead into the final quarter where they cruised in for the win.

“We were missing a couple of key players (Kylee Penner and Ryland Hawkinson) tonight,” pointed out Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “A lot of our younger girls really stepped up big. We were outmatched in size, so I knew we would struggle with rebounding.”

The Lady Eagles got the win despite being out rebounded 24-11 as Solomon hit just 4-of-23 shots for the game and turned the ball over 30 times, including 23 steals by Elyria.

Coach Fields continued his reflections by saying, “I was really proud of the intensity we showed on defense throughout the entire game. We had some really good practices this week and I was pleased with the condition our girls came back in from the break. They worked really hard on their own during the long break.”

Allie Stone and Olivia Clark led the Lady Eagles in scoring with eight points each, while Macy Reiff topped the rebounding with three. Stone recorded seven steals while Olivia Peters had five and KiLynn Starburg had three to lead the defense.

Concluding his reflections on the game, Coach Fields added, “Solomon is a team that has put up some decent numbers this season, so I was thrilled that we held them to single digits.”

With the victory, the Lady Eagles are now 6-2 on the season and will play host to Canton/Galva on Tuesday, January 8.
