WAKEFIELD – A strong second and third quarter helped lift the Little River girls basketball team to a 12-point, 36-24, road victory over Wakefield on Friday.

With neither team showing much offense in the first quarter, the Lady Redskins put 10 points on the board in the second quarter while holding Wakefield to just one bucket to take a commanding 15-6 advantage into the halftime break.

Little River outscored Wakefield 21-18 in the final two quarters to earn their final 12-point win.

“We won our game at Wakefield Friday night and again had a solid defensive game,” explained Lady Redskin Head Coach Brent Clark. “We struggled early on with our offense, some of that was due to having eight turnovers in the first quarter.”

Freshman Aubrey Olander had a monster game as she put 23 points in the scorebook and earned a double-double by pulling down 13 rebounds as well. Olander connected on 11-of-17 fields goals and also made a steal and blocked three shots while on defense.

With Little River grabbing a whopping 33 rebounds in the game, Olander was helped by Lily Boughfman who had 12 while freshman Ashley Stephenson grabbed five. Yet another Little River freshman, Alaina Eck led the team with six steals while sophomore Mea Debaere dished out four assists.

Coach Clark concluded his reflections on the game by saying, “After the long Christmas break and only having four practices, we were a little rusty. (Aubrey) Olander had a spectacular night with her 23 points and 13 rebounds while also playing very well on defense where she recorded three blocked shots. If we can get our offense producing more, we will be a very good basketball team.”

With the victory, the Lady Redskins are now 4-2 for the season and are scheduled to be at home on Tuesday, January 12, when they host Peabody/Burns.
