PENNER, PETERS, STARBURG LED ELYRIA LADY EAGLES

By William

ELYRIA – In a battle of Lady Eagle teams, host Elyria Christian used a strong second and third quarters to power their way to a 27-point, 38-11 victory over Canton/Galva on Tuesday.

After gaining a slim four-point, 9-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter, Elyria shutout Canton/Galva in the second quarter while putting 13 points on the scoreboard themselves to take a commanding 22-5 lead into the halftime break.

After putting another dozen points in the scorebook in the third quarter while again holding Canton/Galva to just a pair of points, Elyria cruised through the final eight minutes of play to gain the win.

“I was happy with consistent defense again tonight,” pointed out Elyria Christian Head Coach Greg Fields. “The girls have been working extremely hard since the break on a different press, and they have bought in with a lot of excitement.”

Kylee Penner led Elyria with 14 points in her return to the lineup after missing a game, while both Olivia Peters and KiLynn Starburg each chipped in with six as seven different girls put points in the scorebook.

Peters topped the team in the paint with seven rebounds while Penner grabbed six. Olivia Clark stole the ball five times while Starburg swiped four as Elyria totaled 21 steals in the game and out rebounded Canton/Galva 26-15.

Coach Fields continued his reflections of the game by adding, “Olivia Clark led the way on defense with five steals while KiLynn (Starburg), (Olivia) Peters, and Allie (Stone) were all right with her with a lot of steals and deflections.”

In talking about the opponent, Coach Fields said, “Canton/Galva really does a nice job with their own defense and their girls do not give up. We struggled to finish around the basket against their physical play. We were glad to have Kylee (Penner) back tonight as she pulled down some great rebounds and she continues to be our steady offensive player.”

Concluding his reflections on the game, Coach Fields explained, “I felt like we are getting better at running our offense and being patient to find good looks. We need to continue to improve on finishing shots inside the lane on our half court sets as well as finishing transition layups.”

The Elyria Lady Eagles are now 7-2 for the season but do not play a regular game again until Tuesday, January 19 when they travel to Sedgwick. The game set for Friday with Centre has been postponed.

Canton/Galva now falls to 1-6 for the season and will host Goessel on Friday.
