HALSTEAD – Their first game back after the holiday break was a rematch with the final game before the break as the Smoky Valley girls basketball team took a trip south to battle Halstead and the Lady Dragons four quarters of consistency gave them a 54-25 win over the Lady Vikings.

Halstead, currently the #2 ranked team in Class 3A, scored at least 15 points in two quarter, 13 in one and 11 in another to show consistency does work.

After leading 11-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Dragons pushed out to a 24-10 advantage over the Lady Vikings by the halftime break before cruising in for the 29-point victory.

“Halstead is a matchup challenge for any team they play,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “If you focus on one player, another one will burn you and vice versa. That is a credit to their talent. I thought we executed our offense better but just couldn’t put the ball in the hole. Some of that is credited to Halstead as we had a bad night against a really good team.”

Playing without Bre Priddy due to an illness, Abby Rose led the Lady Vikings in scoring with seven points while both Adrian Hazelwood and Ellie Brumbaugh each chipped in with five.

Smoky Valley shot just 32% from the field and made just three-of-nineteen free throws.

Rose also topped Smoky Valley in the paint with seven rebounds while also stealing two passes and dishing out a pair of assists.

The Lady Dragons were led by their best player Karena Gerber as she scored 22.

Coach Van Der Wege continued his reflections on the game by saying, “We had to make game time adjustments to not having Bre (Priddy) tonight and we missed her rebounding, as we gave up too many rebounds on the defensive end with led to second chance points. Halstead is tough enough to defend the way it is, when you give up offensive rebounds to them – you will not beat them.”

Concluding his reflections, Coach Van Der Wege added, “Changes in scheduling due to COVID-19 meant that we played Halstead back-to-back. That is a pretty tough stretch and hopefully we can rebound as players and coaches so we will be ready for Friday as we have a lot of season yet to play.”

The loss drops the Lady Vikings to 4-2 for the season as they prep to play host to Hesston on Friday.
