EICHELBERGER GETS DOUBLE-DOUBLE
By William
BENNINGTON – The Moundridge girls basketball team won for the seventh time this season on Tuesday by coming from behind and scoring a one-point, 30-29, victory on the road at Bennington.
Taking an early five-point, 10-5, lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats saw their lead dip to just three points at 16-13 heading into the halftime break.
Bennington put 10 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter while holding Moundridge to just four to take a three-point, 23-20 advantage over the Lady Wildcats heading into the final eight minutes of play where Moundridge put 10 in the scorebook and held Bennington to just six to give them the hairline close, one-point win.
“The Lady Wildcats fought hard to get a win against a scrappy Bennington team,” noted Moundridge Head Coach Vicky Kessler. “Our defense was solid all night, but offensively, we just could not get the ball to go in the basket. The Bulldogs could not stop Kate (Eichelberger) on the inside and that was the key to the game.”
Kate Eichelberger had a monster game as she scored 23 of the teams 30 points while recording a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds as well. Eichelberger connected on seven-of-eleven shots from the free throw line which helped get the victory.
Only three Lady Wildcats scored in the game as Kindall Elmore put six by her name in the scorebook while also helping Eichelberger in the paint with seven rebounds. Kourtney Kaufman may not have scored but she grabbed five rebounds and made a pair of crucial steals on defense.
Coach Kessler concluded her reflections on the game by adding, “We did a great job of getting the ball inside. The game was almost even in every aspect with the difference in the game being at the free throw line. We needed a game like this, which had us fighting for every possession. I am so proud of the girls for their effort and teamwork. We will make some adjustments and get ready to play another tough league game on Friday.”
Now 7-1 for the season, the Lady Wildcats have a tough road game facing them on Friday when they travel southwest to battle with Hutchinson Trinity.
