STRUBER LEADS CANTON/GALVA

ELYRIA – Down two starters, the Elyria Christian boys basketball team ran out of energy to keep up with Canton/Galva and suffered a 15-point, 51-36 loss at home on Tuesday.

Elyria held a slim, two-point 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and were dead even at 19-19 with Canton/Galva going into the halftime break.

Canton/Galva held Elyria to just four points in the third quarter while putting 15 on the scoreboard and took a commanding nine-point, 34-23 advantage into the final eight minutes of play.

“We just ran out of gas tonight against a high-energy Canton/Galva team,” explained Elyria Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “We had one bad stretch where we let them score a number of baskets in a row and we just could not recover. Since we are missing two starters, we had guys that played all 32 minutes and so our fatigue plagued us a number of times in the game and I believe caused our high number of turnovers.”

Canton/Galva only turned the ball over 12 times while Elyria gave it up 23 times.

Zach Stucky had a huge game for Elyria as he scored 23 points which included four 3-pointers, while also pulling down four rebounds, dishing out a pair of assists and making five steals.

Ben Unruh led the team in rebounds with eight while both Bret Anderson and Dominick Lundberg each grabbed seven. Anderson also swiped six steals.

Coach Goodrich concluded his game reflections by saying, I was very proud of Zach (Stucky) and his will to do all in his power to try to help us win. He hit some big 3-pointers and handled the Canton/Galva pressure well. We will look to rebound next week and look forward to getting better in practice.”

For Canton/Galva, Tyson Struber finally seemed to be over some injury issues that plagued him in the early season and recorded a double-double as he led the team with 16 points while pulling down 12 rebounds. Brayden Collins chipped in with a dozen points as well.

Now 5-4 on the season, Elyria’s game with Centre on Friday has been postponed.

Canton/Galva evened their record at 3-3 for the season and will play host to Goessel on Friday.
