BRUMBAUGH LEADS SMOKY VALLEY

By William

LINDSBORG – In a tight, hard fought game on Friday at home, the Smoky Valley girls basketball team could not shut down Hesston enough and lost 31-27.

The Lady Vikings took a two-point, 9-7, lead at the end of the first quarter before Hesston pulled out front and took a four-point, 18-14 advantage as the two teams headed into the halftime break.

After the Lady Swathers took a nine-point lead into the final eight minutes of play, the Lady Vikings battled back and outscored Hesston by five in the final quarter to fall just short and take the four-point loss.

“The Lady Vikings battled back and got within one possession late before Hesston hit two free throws down the stretch to seal their win,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “

While the team stats were close, Hesston scored the win on the free throw line where they took 11 more attempts and made six more shots than Smoky Valley.

Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 13 points which included three three-pointers while Adrian Hazelwood chipped in with six.

Hazelwood also topped the team in rebounds with five while Abby Rose grabbed four. Rose and Breanne Priddy each had a pair of blocked shots while Priddy led the team with three steals.

Speaking of his team, Coach Van Der Wege said, “Ellis (Brumbaugh) shot the ball fairly well tonight, but as a team we struggled. We’ve been in a little bit of an offensive slump the last four games but it has been against the same two teams and those teams are good defensive teams. That is just the way the schedule played out this year.”

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his game reflections by noting, “This was a game in which neither team scored the ball very efficiently. The difference came down to rebounding and foul shots. They were decisively better than us in both categories and that gave them the final margin. I thought these were two evenly matched teams and we came up on the short end. I was proud that we battled back in the fourth quarter and held them to only two points when we could have folded. Unfortunately, we had too big of a hole going into the fourth quarter.”

Next up the Lady Vikings will battle some different teams as they spend next week playing in the Sterling Invitational where they begin by playing Kingman on Monday.
