PYLE, BROWN LEAD SCORING

By William

SALINA – The McPherson Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team split a pair of games on Saturday with Hays as the ‘A’ team scored a razor thin, two-point, 38-36 victory while the ‘B’ team suffered a nine-point, 38-29 loss.

Here is a summary of both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ team games as the 8th grade Junior Pups prep to return to the competitive hardwood on Tuesday with a road trip to Clay Center.

‘A’ TEAM SCORED TWO-POINT WIN

In the ‘A’ game the 8th grade Junior Pups trailed for most of the game before taking a seven-point lead in the final quarter on their way to hanging on for a razor think two-point, 38-36 win over Hays.

The ‘A’ team is now 2-0 for the season.

Gabe Pyle led the team in scoring with 10 points while Bishop Brown chipped in with nine and Carter Allen scored eight.

“This was our first game where there were no fans for either team playing in the game,” noted Head Coach Tyler Brown. “Playing at a neutral site in Salina, was a feeling I hope we never have to get used to. Do not get me wrong, I am extremely grateful for being able to be playing in these times, but you could hear the floor creak when you stepped on the wood floor.”

Concluding his reflections on the game, Coach Brown added, “Nevertheless, we showed perseverance in this game as it wasn’t until 2:30 left in the game that you started to feel some emotion and hype in the game. After trailing most of the game we were able to go on a run to put us up by seven at that point. With only 2:30 to play and up seven we were able to do just enough to hold Hays off for the win. One thing I do love that seems to be a trend currently is that we are finishing games strong in the fourth quarter. Defensively, we have been solid in the second half as we held Salina Lakewood to zero points in the fourth quarter and in this game, we held Hays to just five points in the third quarter. If we can start to do these types of things the entire game or even just more consistently, teams will have a tough time getting by us.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING:

TEAM WON 38-36 OVER HAYS.

Gabe Pyle – 10; Bishop Brown – 9; Carter Allen – 8; Ian Razak – 6; Brody Seidl – 5.

‘B’ TAM STUMBLES, LOSES BY NINE

In the ‘B’ game, the Junior Pups showed improvement but still stumbled in the end and lost by nine, 38-29 to Hays.

“As we saw before in our first game, we have a lot of guys who have not played very much basketball before this,” pointed out ‘B’ team coach TJ Jackson. “We did see improvement from game one to game two. Offensively we ran more smoothly and gave ourselves chances at some easier buckets and we had less unforced errors in this game. On the defensive side, the guys worked hard, and we saw improvement in their ability to help each other.”

Both Brenden Doile and Jaxson Malvo had big games for the ‘B’ team as they lead the scoring with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Coach Jackson concluded his reflections by adding, “The boys were much more competitive this game and it will be fun to continue to watch them grow. If they continue to improve like they have shown already, they will give themselves a chance to be right in each game.”

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING:

TEAM LOST 38-29.

Brenden Doile – 15; Jaxson Malvo – 11; Alec Harms – 2; Brandon Western – 1.
