SALINA – A first half advantage did not hold up on Saturday for the Little River girls basketball team as they stumbled in the third quarter and ended up losing 46-40 to Sacred Heart on the road in Salina.

The Lady Redskins held a two-point first quarter lead and then stretched it out to a six-point, 20-14 advantage going into the halftime break before Sacred Heart’s offense got untracked and scored 23 points in the third quarter and despite 14 points by Little River, gave Sacred Heart a three-point lead heading into the final eight minutes of play where they hung on for the six-point win.

“Thought we played pretty well tonight,” explained Little River Head Coach Brent Clark. “Gave up some three-pointers in the third quarter that wiped away a lead we had. We got outscored 23-14 in that third period. I thought the girls played very well through most of the game.”

Freshman Aubrey Olander had an outstanding game as she recorded a double-double by leading the team in scoring and rebounding with 16 and 11, respectively.

While Alaina Eck, another freshman Lady Redskin, reached double digits with 11, it was junior Lily Boughfman that just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds to go with hitting seven-of-eight on her free throws, dishing out three assists, making three steals and blocking seven shots.

Coach Clark concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “We are an incredibly young team, and it shows at times, but I see improvement with every game. I am immensely proud of the effort they all put out when they are on the court.”

With the loss the Lady Redskins fall to 5-3 for the season as they get nearly a week to prep for their next battle on Friday, January 22 when they travel to Herington.
