CLAY CENTER – It was a successful trip north on Tuesday for the McPherson Middle School 7th grade boys basketball teams as they played at Clay Center and recorded two wins out of three games with both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams recording wins while the ‘C’ team took a loss.

Next up for the 7th grade Junior Pups will be a battle with Derby on Thursday.

Each team summaries are as follows:

SCORE: JUNIOR PUPS 49, Clay Center 16

INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Paxton Ingle – 14; Jett Pyle – 13; Cade Strathman – 10; Kaizer Kanitz – 9; Cowen Huggard – 3.

The 7th grade Junior Pups ‘A’ team cruised to a 33-point, 49-16 victory over Clay Center as three players reached double digits and one just missed by a point.

Paxton Ingels led the team with 14 points while Jett Pyle hit for 13 and Cade Strathman scored 10. Kaizer Kanitz just missed double digits in the scorebook with nine.

“Tonight I thought the boys played very well,” explained Head Coach Paul Reichenberger in his reflections after the game. “Our defense finally clicked as we held Clay Center to just 16 points. Paxton (Ingle) had a monster game with 14 points inside while Jett (Pyle), Cade (Strathman), and Kaizer (Kanitz) also all played well. In the future, our defense needs to go from good to great. I still believe we have another level to get to as a team defensively and the boys are finally starting to realize that. As we gear up for Derby on Thursday night, our focus will be on how to get better defensively.”

SCORE: JUNIOR PUPS 25, Clay Center 20

INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Jaydn Mari – 9; Kaden Godwin – 8; Braxton Burgess – 3; Sean Solofra – 2; Teigan Younger – 2; Trevor Pontious – 1.

In the ‘B’ game the Junior Pups held on to record a five-point, 25-20 win as six players put points on the board led by Jaydn Mari with nine and Kaden Godwin with eight.

In his post-game reflections, ‘B’ team Coach Grant Barrett noted, “We were able to hold off a late run by Clay Center. We found ourselves down after the first quarter, but we were able to string together steals and layups to pus us up going into the fourth quarter. We saw our 10-point lead dwindle down to a two-point deficit late, but after pressuring Clay Center into late turnovers, it was our free throws and defense that won it for us tonight.”

SCORE: Clay Center 32, JUNIOR PUPS 22

INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Carlton Giacobbi – 6; Carter Boesker – 6; Braydon Holt – 6; Blake Paramore – 2; Jakoda Ratzloff – 2.

While not normally scheduled, the ‘C’ game was a battle throughout before Clay Center was able to hold off the Junior Pups for the 10-point, 32-22 victory.

Carlton Giacobbi, Carter Boesker, and Braydon Holt share the team lead in scoring with each putting six points in the scorebook.

Coach Barrett had good reflections to share though as he said, “It was a close matchup the whole way through, but Clay Center was able to drive past our defense in the fourth quarter for the win. I was proud that these guys were able to improve and compete.”
