Traffic Tip Tuesday Postings are presented by the McPherson Police Department.

This Tuesday, January 19, they are discussing the topic of ‘USING HEADPHONES WHILE DRIVING’.

Driving and listening to music go hand in hand, especially when one does a lot of driving.

We enjoy listening to music as much as the next person but listening to music with headphones while you are driving is a TRAFFIC LAW VIOLATION!!

Standard Traffic Ordinance (STO) Sec. 103 states:

  • No person shall operate any motor vehicle on the streets, alleys, or roadways of the city while wearing headphones which in any way interfere with hearing of any traffic noise, or warning devices or signals.

Driving is a divided attention activity.

This requires us to operate our vehicles, while also paying attention to many things around us such as other motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, traffic control devices, traffic signs, and much more.

By drowning out the sounds of horns and emergency sirens, which are designed to warn us of potential hazards, we decrease safety for ourselves and others on the roadway.
