In a game of constant offense, the Moundridge boys basketball team finally held on through overtime to earn a four-point, 100-96 win over Wichita Home School on Monday in their first-round game of the Canton/Galva Boys Invitational Basketball Tournament.

In a game that seemed to have little defense and plenty of offensive swings, the Wildcats took an early 14-point, 21-7 advantage by the end of the first quarter before Wichita Home School began hitting three-pointers and outscored Moundridge 28-13 in the second quarter to take a one-point, 35-34 lead into the halftime break.

After Moundridge pulled out to a nine-point lead at the end of the third stanza, Wichita Home School bounced back to tie the game at the end of regulation in a fourth quarter that saw a whopping 69 points scored between the two teams.

The Wildcats then took control late in overtime to get the final four-point victory.

It was an exciting game and one that Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau will remember and not for what you would expect as the victory was also his 500th win on the Moundridge bench. He now has 516 overall coaching victories.

“Quite a game,” pointed out Coach Unrau during his reflections on the game. “They started hitting three-pointers in the second quarter and pretty much it was going to take a straight jacket as the only thing that was going to stop them from putting them in.”

Wichita Home School shot an incredible 56 three-point attempts and connected on 20 of them including eight by Sam Peffly who finished with 42 points. They also had two other players, Thomas McAdam and Ethan Mefford who connected on five three-pointers each.

For the Wildcats, Landon Kaufman had a monster game as he scored 36 points by hitting 10-of-12 from the field and a perfect 14-of-14 from the free throw. Among his statistic line in the scorebook were a pair of three-pointers, three rebounds he pulled down, five steals he made on defense and a team leading eight assists that he dished out on offense.

Both Jon Schlosser and Corbin Unruh had career nights by each scoring 22 points with Schlosser recording a double-double by also grabbing 13 rebounds. Logan Churchill also reached double digits in the scorebook by getting 10 points.

Coach Unrau concluded his reflections by saying, “Our guys kept attacking and staying aggressive. I was immensely proud of these guys tonight.”

With the win, the Wildcats are now an even 5-5 for the season as they prep to play the winner of the Sedgwick and Bluestem game on Thursday in round two of the Canton/Galva Invitational.
