SEDGWICK – Playing on the road Tuesday in their first-round game of the Centre Cougar Classic, the Elyria Christian girls basketball team used a strong second half defense to squeak out 32-27 victory over Sedgwick.

Trailing by three, 10-7, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles pulled within one at 20-19 heading into the halftime break and then came out in the second half and held Sedgwick to just seven total points while getting 13 of their own and earning the five-point victory.

“I was happy to get a win tonight over a solid team like Sedgwick,” pointed out Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “As far as I know, this was the first time we have faced this team and they have only had a couple of losses this season. I knew from watching film on them that they were a similar team to us. They don’t have a lot of size, but they are very athletic, they play great defense, and they are probably a bit better at shooting than we are as a group.”

Kylee Penner led the Lady Eagles on offense with 13 points which included going three-for-three at the free throw line during some key moments in the game. Ryland Hawkinson just missed double digits in the scorebook with nine points while Alexus Swenson hit for eight.

Hawkinson and Penner led the team on the boards by each grabbing five rebounds while Olivia Peters was a major defensive pest for the Sedgwick offense as she recorded nine steals in the game.

Speaking of his players, Coach Fields concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “Kylee (Penner) did a great job for us on offense as she missed just a few shots under the basket but played under control and made some great post moves to get herself in a position to score. She and Ryland (Hawkinson) were both solid at the free throw line tonight as well. Alexus (Swenson) came off the bench and hit some huge shots to give us the lead. Olivia Peters was relentless on defense tonight. You do not see nine steals in a game very often by a single individual, but Olivia takes so much pride in her defense that it doesn’t surprise me when she a stat like that.”

With the victory, the Lady Eagles push their season record to 8-2 as they prep to travel to Marion on Friday evening for their second game of the Centre Cougar Classic.
