LYSELL-STEWART LEADS SMOKY VALLEY

STERLING – It was a struggle offensively on Tuesday for the Smoky Valley boys basketball team as they opened their participation in the Sterling Invitational with a 67-24 loss to Hugoton.

Hugoton jumped out to a 10-point, 21-11 lead by the end of the first quarter before stretching it out to a 15-point lead at 35-20 heading into the halftime break.

The Vikings only scored 14 points in the second half as finished out the game with the 43 point loss.

Smoky Valley shot just 34% from the field while Hugoton connected on 55% of their shots, including 12 three-pointers. The Vikings also had trouble matching up on the boards and were out rebounded 28-16.

Haven Lysell-Stewart was one Viking player that had a solid game as he led the team in scoring with 14 points by connecting on five-of-eight from the field and four-of-five from the free throw line. No other Viking had more than five points.

Now 2-5 for the season, the Vikings will battle with Scott City on Thursday in their second-round game of the Sterling Invitational. Scott City comes into the game 1-6 for the year having lost to Sterling 54-23 on Tuesday.
