BRUMBAUGH LEADS SMOKY VALLEY

By William

STERLING – When the Smoky Valley girls basketball team played Hugoton in their second game of the Sterling Invitational on Thursday, they were playing the 5th ranked team in Class 3A, unfortunately it did not go faltered late and lost 63-49.

Hugoton jumped out to a seven-point, 18-11 first quarter lead before the Lady Vikings whittled a pair of points off the deficit but were still behind by five, 29-24, going into the halftime break.

Smoky Valley took a short-lived lead in early in the third quarter but eventually fell behind again and took the 14-point loss.

“Hugoton is a strong team on both ends and we competed well tonight,” said Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “I was proud of how we took care of the ball as we had only 12 turnovers against their defensive pressure. We moved the ball pretty well, but just didn’t hit enough shots to keep up with Hugoton’s offensive firepower.”

Two big reasons Hugoton won had to do with Mikyn Hamlin who led their offense with 29 points while Jordyn Beard dominated on the boards as she pulled down 14 rebounds.

Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings with 14 points while McKinley Johnson hit for six. Nine Smoky Valley girls put points in the scorebook, including three with five and three with four. Adrian Hazelwood led the work in the paint with five rebounds while Abby Rose, Ellie Brumbaugh, and Claire Broxterman each grabbed four, even though Hugoton out rebounded Smoky Valley 45-34 in the game.

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his reflections on the game by saying, “We did not slow down Mikyn Hamlin much, and when we did, she has plenty of other teammates who can score the ball. We hit a stretch in the third quarter where we just could not keep pace offensively and they were able to break the game open. Despite the outcome the Lady Vikings took a step forward in how they played.”

While the loss drops the Smoky Valley girls to 5-4 overall, they play for third place in the Sterling Invitational on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Scott City.
