KAUFMAN HITS FOR 30, UNRUH GETS 14
By William
CANTON – For the second game in a row, the Moundridge boys basketball team had to go into overtime to earn a win as Sedgwick pushed them into overtime on Thursday before the Wildcats were able to secure a one-point, 59-58 win in their second-round game of the Canton/Galva Invitational.
After the Wildcats held a one-point first quarter lead, they pushed the advantage out to 10 points at 30-20 heading into the halftime break.
Sedgwick knocked a couple of points off the lead in the third quarter before dropping a couple of late three-pointers in the final eight minutes of play to push the game into overtime where Moundridge was able then to hang on for the one-point victory.
“We lead pretty much most of the game before giving up back-to-back threes with three minutes left in the game,” explained Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau. “We then had to tie the game with nine seconds left, then Sedgwick had a shot and an offensive rebound to win only to have it rim off, so we went to overtime.”
Following his 36-point outburst on Monday night, the Wildcats Landon Kaufman came back and put 30 points on the scoreboard Thursday against Sedgwick to lead the offense while Corbin Unruh pitched in with 14. Jon Schlosser led the team on the boards by pulling down five rebounds while both Corbin Unruh and Joseph Schrag each grabbed four.
Lance Hoffsamner and Nolan Crumrune led Sedgwick with 20 and 19 points which included four three-pointers by Crumrune.
Coach Unrau finished his reflections on the second straight overtime by saying, “We battled some foul trouble tonight. Joseph Schrag came off the bench and played some big minutes for us although it does not show up in the stat line. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds, that cannot let that happen and it really disappoints me. We have got to make that a priority. Had to be resilient again tonight. Proud of the progress these guys are making.”
The victory puts the Wildcats over .500 for the season at 6-5 as they prep to play in the championship game of the Canton/Galva Invitational against the winner of the game between Bennington and Canton/Galva.
