BUHLER – On a rare Saturday morning game time, the McPherson Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team traveled to Buhler to battle with Prairie Hills Middle School and game home with a split of two games as the ‘A’ team won but the ‘B’ team continued to miss the win column.

Next up for the 8th grade Junior Pups will be on Monday, January 25, when they travel to Hutchinson.

Here is the ‘A’ and ‘B’ game summaries:

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM GAME INFO:

SCORE: JUNIOR PUPS 43, Prairie Hills 23

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING:

Gabe Pyle – 16; Bishop Brown – 10; Ian Razak – 10; Brenden Doile – 5; Carter Allen – 2.

Playing with lots of energy and a stiff defense, the 8th grade Junior Pups ‘A’ team scored a commanding 20-point, 43-23, victory over Prairie Hills on Saturday.

The win pushes the ‘A’ teams season record to 4-1.

“This morning I felt like the team came out with tremendous energy with a 17-point first quarter to open the game,” explained 8th grade Junior Pups Head Coach Tyler Brown. “But it was not just our offense as we were able to hold them to just two points in the first quarter. I also felt like we did a better job getting Ian Razak involved as we utilized him on the screen in a roll game well along with guys being able to attack the rim and being able to drop it off to Ian on the back side.”

Gabe Pyle once again led the team in scoring with 16 points while both Bishop Brown and Ian Razak joined him in double digits with 10 points each.

Coach Brown continued his reflections on the game by saying, “Our shooting wasn’t as good as our last game from the three-point line, but we made up for it with scoring at the rim and getting after it defensively. It was a little unusual for us not to get to the free throw line at all in the game, but I guess that happens sometimes.”

In his final remarks, Coach Brown added, “The boys are starting to trust each other more and we had some outstanding ball movement with guys making the extra pass or just the correct basketball play. It is when we get caught up in worrying about who is getting the ball compared to the right action, that is when things don’t look good.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM GAME INFO:

SCORE: Prairie Hills 41, JUNIOR PUPS 26

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING:

Jaxson Malvo – 12; Brody Seidl – 6; Logan Peterson – 5; Kaven Byrd – 3.

In the ‘B’ game, the Junior Pups dropped to 0-5 for the season as work in the paint and under the boards still seemed to struggle and Prairie Hills scored a 41-26 win.

“These guys keep getting better as we go,” pointed out ‘B’ team Coach TJ Jackson. “You got to be coachable if you want to get better and we showed a lot of growth on defense between games, now they just need to clean up our game in transition.”

Jaxson Malvo led the team in scoring with 12 while Brody Seidl and Logan Peterson hit for six and five each.

Coach Jackson finished up his reflections on the game by saying, “Rebounding is still a sore spot for us on both ends of the court. Again, offensively we improved as the game went on. Once they settled in a bit and started to move the ball better, they saw how it’s supposed to look and they would get in a flow at times. Proud of them and really appreciated even when things are down, they continue to hustle.”
