PENNER, STONE, HAWKINSON LEAD LADY EAGLES

MARION – In a hard fought, physical game on Friday, the Elyria Christian girls team out lasted Marion to score a 41-29 win in the second round of the Centre Cougar Classic.

The win gives the Lady Eagles a 9-2 mark for the season as they prep to play at home on Saturday against Herington in the final round of the Centre Cougar Classic. The Lady Eagles are also currently ranked # 7 in Class 1A.

Against Marion, the teams were tied at 6-6 at the end of the first before the Lady Eagles pulled a bit ahead by four at 16-12 going into the halftime break. While Marion whittled two points off the lead by the end of the third quarter, Elyria pushed back out ahead in the final eight minutes to gain the final 12-point victory.

“This was a hard-fought game against a very physical Marion team,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields in his post-game reflections. “Coach Hett has his girls playing tough, and I knew going into the game that this team was much better than what their record shows.”

Kylee Penner led the Elyria offense with 15 points which included going 5-6 at the free throw stripe, while Allie Stone also reached double digits with 12 points that included 2-2 from beyond the 3-point arc. Stone also was quick with the hands on defense as she made six steals in the contest while dishing out three key assists when on offense.

Ryland Hawkinson contributed with her normal overall solid game as she went 4-6 from the free throw line while scoring eight points and doing some damage on defense with a pair of blocked shots and two steals. Hawkinson combined with KiLynn Starburg to help the battle on the boards as they combined for 13 rebounds with Hawkinson getting seven and Starburg getting six.

Coach Fields finished up his reflections on the battle by adding, “We struggled against their defense in the first half where we had the majority of our turnovers. We did a much better job taking care of the ball in the second half. I have been very happy with the fight that our girls have been showing in some of these tight games to close them out the way we need to finish.”
