STONE, HAWKINSON LEAD LADY EAGLES

ELYRIA – In the modified Centre Cougar Classic this week the Elyria Christian girls basketball team finished with three straight wins including a 41-31 victory over Herington on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a big 15-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and then still held an 11-point, 23-12 advantage going into the halftime break.

While Herington whittled a few points off that lead in the third quarter, Elyria hung on in the final two quarters to earn the 10-point win.

“This was a great game to finish up this tournament that had a very different kind of feel thatn the normal Centre Cougar Classic,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “I was very happy with the way everyone stepped up to contribute tonight as seven of our eight girls that played significant minutes scored today.”

Allie Stone and Ryland Hawkinson both reached double digits scoring for the Lady Eagles with 11 and 10 points each while Kylee Penner hit for seven and Alexus Swenson scored six.

Speaking of his players, Coach Fields noted, “I believe KiLynn (Starburg) was our one player that did not score but she had an outstanding game defensively as well as rebounding and making some great assists. Allie (Stone) and Ryland (Hawkinson) led the way offensively, and it was nice to have Olivia (Clark) and Alexus (Swenson) hit some big threes for us as well.”

As a team a couple of stats that stood out for the Lady Eagles was the 16 steals they made on defense led by Olivia Peters with five and Hawkinson with four as they forced Herington into making 25 turnovers in the game.

In the paint, both Hawkinson and Starburg pulled down six rebounds while Olivia Peters grabbed five.

Coach Fields concluded his reflections on the game by saying, “I love to see the joy on our girls faces as they battled extremely hard when the game was close. It can be difficult for young players to appreciate the fun and excitement of what they are doing in the moment when it is a stressful situation, but you could tell that they were simply enjoying playing together today.”

With the win, the Lady Eagles are now a sparkling 10-2 on the season as they get a whole week off to practice and prep for their next game which will be on the road at Centre on Saturday, January 30.
