By William

ELYRIA – The Elyria Christian boys basketball team finished out a solid week of successful basketball as they won their final two games of the Centre Cougar Classic with wins over Marion and Herington giving them three wins in five days.

On Friday, the Eagles dominated Marion with a 26-point, 61-35, victory before bouncing back early Saturday afternoon to take down Herington with a 12-point, 40-28, win.

The wins give the Eagles a 7-4 record for the season as they now get a week to rest up and prep for their return to the competitive hardwood on Saturday, January 30, when they go on the road to play Centre.

Here are the game summaries for the Eagle wins over Herington and Marion:

ELYRIA BOYS SCORE WIN OVER HERINGTON

On Saturday, the Elyria boys closed out a good week with their third win in the Centre Cougar Classic as they beat Herington 40-28.

The Eagles lead by one at the end of the first quarter at 10-9 before holding Herington to just a single point in the second quarter while adding 10 to the scoreboard themselves to take a more commanding 10-point, 20-10 advantage into the intermission before coming out and playing the game even up between the two teams in the final two quarters where Elyria then got the final 12-point victory.

“We turned around on early Saturday afternoon and played Herington for our final contest of the Cougar Classic,” said Elyria Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “I felt we had some good looks, but then struggled to find our shot from the outside. We are getting better at finding the post, and it could not come at a better time as we will see some zone in our upcoming contests.”

After dominating Marion on Friday, the Eagles were challenged by Herington and while seven Eagles put points on the board only Zach Stucky reached double digits with 14 though Bret Anderson came close with nine.

Joseph Hobson and Anderson shared the team lead in the paint with six rebounds each.

Coach Goodrich concluded his reflections on the game and the week by saying, “Zach (Stucky) finished with 14 points as he continues to be efficient for us on the offensive end. Ben (Unruh) added seven points and continues to be a strong presence on the floor both offensively and defensively. All the guys are getting better, and I felt this week was good for us to build on the little things as we hit the final month in a half of the season.”
