CANTON – Strong second and fourth quarters propelled the Moundridge boys basketball team to a 55-45 win over Wichita Classical School on Saturday and making them Champions of the 2021 Canton/Galva Basketball Invitational.

The Wildcats held just a one-point advantage, 13-12, at the end of the first quarter before pulling out to a commanding 13-point, 33-20, lead as the two teams went to the locker rooms for the halftime break.

Wichita Classical bounced back in the third quarter and cut the lead down to just three points at 39-36 before Moundridge was able to bounce back and gain the final 10-point victory.

“A strong second and fourth quarter plus a strong rebounding effort was the difference tonight,” pointed out Wildcat Head Coach Vance Unrau in his post-game reflections. “Getting on the glass has been a big concern of mine and we attacked the boards aggressively.”

Moundridge most definitely took care of business in the paint as they out rebounded Wichita Classical 35-20 of which 16 rebounds came on the offensive end of the court enabling the Wildcats to score 20 second chance points in the game.

The Wildcats Schlosser had his second huge game of the tournament as he scored a major double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. Schlosser also blocked a pair of shots.

Korbin Wedel almost gave the Wildcats two players with a double-double as he scored 12 points and just missed double digits in rebounds with nine.

Making a three-some in double digit scoring was Logan Churchill who had an overall solid night on the stat sheet with 10 points, including the lone two three-pointers for Moundridge, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.

While both Landon Kaufman and Corbin Unruh did not have the scoring nights they have had, Kaufman led the offense by dishing out seven assists and Unruh grabbed six rebounds, handed out four assists and led the Wildcats in steals with four.

Coach Unrau concluded his reflections by saying, “Jon (Schlosser) continues to be exceptionally reliable night in and night out for us as he had his second double-double of the week. Korbin (Wedel) had a solid week as well and continues to improve and play with a lot of effort and purpose.”

The victory gives the Moundridge boys a 7-5 record for the season as they now get a few days off before returning to the competitive court next Friday when they play host to an extremely aggressive Goessel team.
