HAVEN – It was rough night for the Moundridge girls basketball team on Monday as they had to battle #2 state ranked Garden Plain in the first round of the Haven Girls Basketball Tournament and the Lady Wildcats fell short in losing 75-51.

Garden Plain’s offense put 21 points on the board in the first quarter to take an early nine-point, 21-12 lead over the Lady Wildcats and then pushed their advantage out to 14-point going into the halftime break at 36-22.

Moundridge was unable to stop their offensive flow coming out of the break as Garden Plain put another 22 points on the board in the third and had their final 24-point lead and win going into the final eight minutes of play when the Lady Wildcats played them even.

“We faced #2 ranked Garden Plain in the first round of the Haven Tournament and they were physical from the beginning to the end of the game,” explained Lady Wildcat Head Coach Vicky Kessler. “We struggled to match that physicality and it took it toll. Garden Plain has so many offensive weapons and even though we changed our defense several times, they were able to find the open player for a good shot.”

Kate Eichelberger led the Lady Wildcats offense with 17 points, including a steady 7-8 from the free throw line while Kourtney Kaufman also had a solid night offensively and scored 15 while Erin Durst ended up with seven.

Erin Durst led Moundridge on offense by dishing out six assists while Eichelberger and Kaufman held their own in the paint and gathered in seven and six rebounds each.

Coach Kessler concluded her comments on the game by saying, “On a positive note, the team was able to find the open player for a good shot. Another positive note was we were able to get to the free-throw line 25 times to only 13 for Garden Plain. Kate (Eichelberger) went 7-8 at the free-throw line for us while scoring 17 points and Kourtney (Kaufman) added an offensive spark with three three-pointers and ending up with 15 points. This will be a very tough tournament so we will have to regroup quickly.”

Next up for the now 9-2 Lady Wildcats will be a matchup with Rose Hill in round two of the Haven Girls Basketball Tournament.
