JOHNSON, HAZELWOOD LEAD SMOKY VALLEY
By William
LINDSBORG – An early first quarter lead helped propel the Smoky Valley girls basketball team to a nine-point, 45-36 home court win over Hutchinson Trinity on Tuesday.
“Smoky Valley returned home tonight and defeated Hutchinson Trinity 45-36,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “The Lady Vikings led throughout the contest and were able to work the clock throughout the fourth quarter.”
The Lady Vikings jumped out to an early eight-point, 10-2 advantage by the end of the first quarter and then held a nine-point, 22-13 lead over Trinity heading into the halftime break before cruising in for the final nine-point victory.
Coach Van Der Wege continued his reflections on the game by adding, “Trinity has two very prolific scorers in (Hayley) Hughes and (Becca) Hammersmith. It may appear we did not defend them very well based on their points, but our defense on the ball and help side forced the two of them into taking a lot of shots to get their points. Offensively we moved the ball extremely well, even when the shot did not fall. Trinity has a lot of length, which bothered us a little inside but overall, I am incredibly pleased with our effort and game.”
Outside of Hughes and Hammersmith, who combined for 34 of the teams 36 points, the Lady Vikings held Trinity to just two team points much due to 13 steals and six blocked shots.
For Smoky Valley, the offense was led by McKinley Johnson with 13 points and Adrian Hazelwood with 11 while Kerington Haxton had eight. Hazelwood also contributed with eight steals, one blocked shot and six rebounds while Johnson pulled down five rebounds and made three three-pointers.
With the victory the Lady Vikings are now 7-4 for the season as they look to a busy week with road trips to Hoisington on Thursday and to Clay Center on Friday. Clay Center is currently ranked #3 in Class 4A.
