HAXTON, PRIDDY LEAD SMOKY VALLEY

HOISINGTON – In a game that was rescheduled from January 5th, the Smoky Valley girls traveled to Hoisington on Thursday for a makeup game and brought home win number eight on the season and third in a row after defeating Hoisington 47-38.

The Lady Vikings doubled up Hoisington in the first quarter, 14-7, before taking an eight-point, 22-14 advantage into the halftime break. Smoky Valley then cruised through the final two quarters to earn the final nine-point victory.

“Hoisington is an athletic, scrappy team that likes to run a lot of pick and rolls or take you off the dribble,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “Our girls really defended well tonight and were able to get ahead and then keep Hoisington at arms-length throughout the contest. They got within three possession in the third quarter while we had a little scoring drought, but McKinley (Johnson) hit a big shot and that got us going again. We were able to extend our lead to 14-15 points midway through the fourth quarter and seal the win from there.”

Kerington Haxton had a solid overall game as she led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 14 which included three three-pointers while also pulling down six rebounds, blocking a shot, making a steal and finding time to dish out three assists.

Breanna Priddy just missed a double-double as she grabbed 11 rebounds to go with nine points and a blocked shot.

Coach Van Der Wege talked about his players, including Ellie Brumbaugh as he concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “This was our first game without senior Ellie Brumbaugh who suffered an injury Tuesday. Our girls responded well in picking up the slack with Kerington (Haxton) having a big night for us as one of our other senior leaders. I really like how we are playing right now but we have a big test on Friday night. Part of the test will be fatigue from it being the sixth game in two weeks and a bigger part will be taking on the number three team in Class 4A in Clay Center. However, our girls are tough, and they will be ready to compete no doubt about that.”

With the win the Lady Vikings are now 8-4 and have a tough road test ahead as they travel Friday to Clay Center, currently ranked # 3 in Class 4A.
