HAWKINSON, STONE, LEAD LADY EAGLES

By William

LOST SPRINGS – After being off for a week the Elyria Christian girls basketball team got back into the swing of things on Saturday and scored a 38-27 road win over Centre.

“It was good to get back to playing after a week off,” noted Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “I felt like we were pretty flat offensively through most of the first half. We knew that Centre plays strong physical basketball, but it looked like we were not ready for it when the game started. They did a good job taking away a lot of options for us inside, so it was nice to have Allie (Stone) shooting the ball so well from the outside. With her hot hand, and Alexus (Swenson) and Olivia (Clark) getting some good looks, things started to open up more for us inside down the stretch.”

After the Lady Eagles jumped out to a solid seven-point, 10-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, Centre whittled it down to just one point, 15-14, heading into the halftime break. After Elyria stretched the advantage back out to nine by the end of the third quarter, they cruised in for the final 11-point victory.

While Allie Stone lead Elyria in scoring with 12 points, thanks to four three-pointers, it was Ryland Hawkinson who had the big game as she recorded her first double double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing out a pair of assists, blocking two shots and making two steals.

As a team the Lady Eagles had two impressive stats to smile about as they recorded 17 steals on defense and when playing offense, the made 12 assists on 13 field goals made from the field.

Coach Fields concluded his reflections on the Saturday road trip by saying, “Ryland (Hawkinson) had a great game for us with her first double-double of the season. She really was ready to be aggressive on both ends of the court. KiLynn (Starburg) and Olivia (Peters) were very disruptive for us on defense (they recorded nine steals between them). All the girls did a nice job of getting Centre sped up and out of their comfort zone.”

Now 11-2 for the season, the Lady Eagles will host Wakefield on Tuesday.
