KAUFMAN, EICHELBERGER, DURST LEAD MOUNDRIDGE

By William

HAVEN – After leading much of the first three quarters, the Moundridge girls basketball team fell behind in the final eight minutes of play and Rose Hill made their free throws to give them a 54-45 win over the Lady Wildcats at the Haven Classic on Friday.

Moundridge started out with an offensive explosion of 17 points in the first quarter and took a commanding 17-5 advantage into the second period before Rose Hill began to right the ship and outscore the Lady Wildcats 18-10 to pull back within four at 27-23 going into the halftime break.

After Rose Hill pulled ahead by one, 36-35, at the end of the third quarter the Lady Wildcats had trouble stopping their attack on the basket and began to foul, giving Rose Hill the opportunity to complete 11-14 free throws in the final eight minutes of play and get the eventual nine-point victory over Moundridge.

Kourtney Kaufman, Kate Eichelberger and Erin Durst provided most of the Lady Wildcat offense as they finished with 12, 11, and 10 points respectively while Kaufman and Eichelberger led the team in the paint with seven rebounds each and Durst grabbed another six. Durst also had the quick hands while on defense as she stole the ball from Rose Hill four times.

Lady Wildcat Head Coach Vicky Kessler had few reflections after the game when she noted, “This was a disappointing loss for the Lady Wildcats. We struggled with rebounding and stopping their drive to the basket. We need to get back to the basics and get better in these skills.”

The loss leaves the Lady Wildcats at 9-3 for the season.
