LANGDON – Like the boys a week earlier, the Little River girls basketball team crowned themselves champions on Friday at the Fairfield Lady Falcon Basketball Tournament after they defeated Central Christian, 38-28.

Along with the team winning the tournament championship, junior Lily Boughfman was named the tournaments MVP while both she and Alaina Eck were named to the ‘All Tournament Team’.

Little River took an early six-point advantage at the end of the first quarter and nudged it out to an eight-point 19-11 lead heading into the halftime break. After both teams put 11 points on the board in the third quarter, the Lady Redskins added a couple of points to their lead and earned the final 10-point victory.

“We came out and played very well early by building a 19-4 lead only to let them score the last seven points of the first half,” explained Lady Redskin Head Coach Brent Clark. “Central Christian is a very good team, and to hold them to just 11 points in the first half is a testament to our defense.”

Little River needed everything they could give Central Christian as the Lady Redskins themselves turned the ball over 20 times, but they made up for it on defense as they blocked 11 shots, including five each by Lily Boughfman and Aubrey Olander, while using quick hands to make 12 steals which included three each by Boughfman, Olander, and MeKenzie Renken.

Boughfman was the main gun on offense for the Lady Redskins as she put 21 points in the scorebook while Olander chipped in with seven.

A highlight of the team effort for Little River came in the stat sheet as they recorded 14 assists on 16 made shots from the field.

Other stat highlights for the Lady Redskins had Renken dishing out eight assists while tying with Olander for the team lead in rebounds with seven though Boughfman also grabbed six.

Coach Clark concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “It was a great win for us and should give us more confidence the rest of the season. As the quote goes ‘Offense wins games, defense wins Championships’. It took a team effort this week to win this tournament and I am enormously proud of how our girls played.”

The win puts the Lady Redskins at 9-3 for the season and now prep to play host to Solomon on Tuesday, February 2.
