STONE, HAWKINSON, STARBURG LEAD LADY EAGLES

ELYRIA – When you struggle shooting it is good to have quality defense and that is what the Elyria Christian girls leaned on Tuesday night in their 33-15 home court win over Wakefield.
Snuffing out the Wakefield offense from the opening tip, the Lady Eagles did not allow the visitors to score in the first quarter and only gave up four points in the entire first half as they pushed out to a 12-7 advantage going into the halftime break before cruising in for the final 18-point victory.
“Shooting nights like this are why we emphasize defense so much,” explained Lady Eagle Head Coach Greg Fields. “We really struggled to score, and it did not matter if it was open three’s or layups off a steal, we just couldn’t seem to get the ball in the hoop.”
While Wakefield only connected on 5-31 shots, the Lady Eagles only shot 30% themselves, but they were able to dominate the boards as they outrebounded the visitors 35-23 while making 12 steals and blocking three shots playing defense.
Allie Stone led Elyria with 11 points while Ryland Hawkinson chipped in with nine and Kylee Penner added eight. Olivia Peters led the work inside by grabbing eight rebounds as three other Lady Eagles recorded six rebounds on their stat line.
Coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “I was proud of the way our girls continue to battle through the frustrations they were feeling on offense and continued to play smart, defensive basketball without fouling. Allie (Stone) is continuing to be a spark on offense as well as being extremely disruptive on defense. Olivia Peters was outstanding on the boards tonight as the rebounds she got were hard fought and hard to come by. We need to continue to have confidence in our shooting, and not be satisfied with what we are doing of defense.”
The Lady Eagles are now ranked sixth in the Class 1A Division II and raised their record to 12-2 as they ready to host Goessel on Friday.
