WIGGERS, HOBSON LEAD EAGLES

ELYRIA – It is hard to beat a team that shoots 55% from the field and that is what Goessel did on Friday in scoring a 48-37 win over Elyria on the Eagles home court.

Doubling up the Eagles in the first quarter at 12-6, Goessel kept the upper hand and held a seven-point, 24-17, advantage going into the halftime break before cruising in for the final 11-point victory.

“Tonight, was a night that I felt we were not locked in and doing the things we needed to do for the entire 32 minutes cost us the game,” explained Eagle Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “We had moments where we looked like the team, we’ve been the last couple of games and then other times where we looked like nothing of the sort.”

For the game, Goessel hit 55% from the field, including 64% from two-point range, and that is a stat that is hard to overcome, especially when they out rebounded the Eagles 33-18 as well.

Leading the way for the Eagles were Keyan Wiggers and Josef Hobson, who both scored 11 with Hobson also hitting on three three-pointers and leading the team in rebounds with six.

While Zach Stucky struck out on scoring, he still played a strong game for Elyria as he dished out four assists, made three steals and grabbed a pair of rebounds.

Coach Goodrich concluded his reflections on the loss by adding, “It is really difficult to win when you commit 19 turnovers. We shot 24 threes and when you only make six it is tough to crack a zone. Josef (Hobson) saw some shots go in early and his shooting will be key for us in this last stretch of games. I was also immensely proud of Keyan (Wiggers) who struggled in the first half but played strong and hard in the second half. We need to continue to find consistent play night in and night out from our core guys and I think we will find success in this last stretch of games.”

Now 9-5 for the season, the Elyria boys have a tough week ahead as they travel to Herington on Tuesday before hosting the top ranked team in the state, Little River, on Friday.
