BEAT LARNED, LOSE TO HILLSBORO

By William

It was night and day between the two games this week for the Smoky Valley girls as they dominated in a win over Larned on Friday after being dominated on the road at Hillsboro on Tuesday.

With the split of the two games, the Lady Vikings are now 9-6 for the season as they prep to host Lyons on Tuesday before going on the road Friday to Nickerson.

Here are game summaries plus team and individual stats for both games:

LADY VIKINGS DOMINATE LARNED

The Lady Vikings made up for their stumble at Hillsboro on Friday when they dominated Larned to score a 17-point, 45-28 win.

Smoky Valley played consistent offense as they scored 11 points in the first quarter, nine in the second and another 11 in the third before closing out with a 14 point final eight minutes on their way to the win, including leading by 11 at the halftime break and connecting on six three-pointers.

“We returned home to host Larned and came away with the 45-28 win,” noted Lady Viking Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “As with a number of our wins this season, we counldn’t ever decisively put Larned away, but we still controlled the game. In the first half we relied too heavily on the three ball. In the second half the girls worked harder on getting the ball into the paint and then kicking it out if needed and our shooting was better. Our shooting was not efficient enough to blow the game open, but I am proud of how they defended most of the night. This was a game we were favored to win, and the girls took care of business.:

Nine Lady Vikings put points by their name in the scorebook against Larned led by Ellie Brumbaugh who scored 10 and Adrian Hazelwood who chipped in with nine. Brumbaugh had three three-pointers to go with four rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot for a solid overall game.

Breanna Priddy led the work in the paint with seven rebounds while three girls grabbed four each.

TUESDAY: HILLSBORO ROLLS OVER LADY VIKINGS

Hillsboro showed why they are ranked number three in 2A as they hammered the Lady Vikings on Tuesday in getting a 43-24 victory.

While Smoky Valley held a slim three-point, 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Trojans put 21 points up in the second quarter and never looked back on their way to the 19-point win.

“Tonight we took on another state ranked foe and were even with them for about 12 minutes in the first half,” said Head Coach Van Der Wege. “That run to the end of the first half took the wind out of our sails. We battled defensively in the second half, but just could not hit any shots to break into their lead and fuel any sort of a rally. We also struggled to rebound against bigger teams like Hillsboro, which gives them more second chance opportunities and they did not waste many of those.”

The Lady Vikings hit just 22% from the field as Adrian Hazelwood was the top scorer with 12 points.
