PRIDDY, MULLEN, HAZELWOOD LEAD SMOKY VALLEY

By William

LINDSBORG – With somewhat consistency for four quarters, the Smoky Valley girls out hustled Lyons overall to score a 52-40 win at home on Tuesday.

“The girls led by just one after the first quarter but were able to extend the lead throughout the contest to get the win,” noted Lady Viking head coach Larry Van Der Wege. “It was a team effort as we had nine different girls score.”

Both teams put up numbers in the first quarter with Smoky Valley holding a one-point, 17-16 advantage before pushing it out to a six-point, 26-20 lead heading into the halftime break.

In the final two quarters the Lady Vikings outscored Lyons 26-20 to earn the 12-point victory.

One stat that stuck out in favor of Smoky Valley was in the paint where the Lady Vikings held a dominating 37-18 advantage, and it could have been more except for the fact that Lyons’ Caitlyn Belote, just a sophomore, grabbed 12 of their rebounds on her way to a double-double as she also scored 21 of the team points.

Speaking of Lyons, coach Van Der Wege said, “They had me worried coming in because they are a small, active group that likes to spread you out and drive the ball. (Caitlyn) Belote also will play outside and then post up effectively inside. They had enough success to keep the game in reach for them but overall, I thought we defended them extremely well and rebounded extremely well. We also got out and ran tonight which opened some transition points and the girls shot the ball better, especially from beyond the arc where we connect on 7-of-15. You can see the scoring that this group is unselfish, and they move the ball around while all have an ability to score. We had good inside/outside balance.”

With nine Lady Vikings putting points and numbers in the stat sheet it is not surprising that none reached double digits though Breanna Priddy and Keira Mullen came close with nine points each working the inside. Adrian Hazelwood, Kerington Haxton, and Ellie Brumbaugh each chipped in with seven. Priddy was also a key as she went 5-of-5 from the free throw line at some important moments in the game.

Mullen and Hazelwood lead the team in rebounds with seven each as seven girls recorded at least three rebounds in the game.

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his reflections by adding, “Before the game we talked about doing the little things. Things like boxing out and helping inside on defense. I think we improved tonight but we will look at the film. We also went to a zone in the second and fourth quarters and found some success. We continue to improve and that is what it’s all about.”

Now 10-6 for the season, the Lady Vikings will go on the road Friday for a battle at Nickerson.
