PENNER, STONE, HAWKINSON, PETERS LEAD LADY EAGLES

HERINGTON – After a rough first quarter Tuesday, the Elyria Christian girls righted the offensive ship and sailed ahead with enough gusto to score a stormy, hard fought 51-41 win in overtime on the road at Herington.

“This was confidence building win for our girls to know that we can come back from adversity,” explained Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “Even though we had a win over Herington in the mid-season tournament, they came in undefeated in the league with some great athletes. In the first half, everything seemed to right for them, and nothing was working for us. We were timid on offense and not attacking their zone. We found ourselves with a 17-point deficit in the third quarter before our defense finally started to wear them down and we found some holes in their zone while on offense.”

Herington jumped out to a seven-point, 9-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and held an 11-point, 24-13 advantage when the two teams went to the halftime break. After falling behind by as much of 17 early in the third, the Lady Eagles began to right the ship and pulled to within nine going into the fourth quarter where they outscored Herington 14-5 to tie the game at 40-40 at the end of regulation.

Elyria then held Herington to just a single point in overtime while putting 11 on the scoreboard to pull away for the hard fought 10-point victory.

Three Lady Eagles scored in double digits for the game led by Kylee Penner with 18 while Allie Stone connected on four three-pointers to score 12 and Ryland Hawkinson chipped in with 11.

Four different girls dished out a pair of assists while seven Lady Eagles had at least one rebound led by Olivia Peters with nine and both Penner and KiLynn Starburg grabbing seven.

While Peters may have only scored a single point in the game, her mark was everywhere as they dished out two assists, had the nine rebounds and lead the defense with six steals.

Coach Fields acknowledged the team effort by saying, “Kylee (Penner) was consistent throughout the game on offense, Ryland (Hawkinson) had a great second half being aggressive around the basket, Olivia Peters was outstanding on defense with six steals, Olivia Clark hit four key free throws in overtime to help seal the win, and Allie (Stone) was our main threat from the outside. KiLynn (Starburg) really stepped up huge at the end of regulation after getting knocked around all game as she finished a couple of fast break opportunities to finally give us the lead.”

Coach Fields concluded his reflections on the overtime win by adding, “It is hard to highlight one or two girls for the overtime comeback. It was absolutely amazing for me to watch the intensity that everyone played with. It took three bloody noses and a couple of our girls fouling out to wake everyone up and turn things around.”

Now ranked number five in Class 1A Division II, the Lady Eagles are now 14-2 for the season as they prep for a huge battle at home on Friday when the Little River Lady Redskins ride in with a #8 ranking in Class 1A and a 12-3 season record.
