ELYRIA – With both teams shooting better than 50% from the field, it was who scored first and fastest that won the game and that honor went to the Little River boys as they jumped out early and often and then kept Elyria Christian in check enough to score a 69-36 win.

The Redskins put 24 points on the board in the first quarter while holding the Eagles to just 10 before pushing the 14-point advantage out to 25 at 41-16 heading into the halftime break before earning their final 33-point victory.

“We knew we would have to take care of the basketball and guard them extremely well to be able to compete with one of the best small school teams in the state this year in Little River,” noted Elyria Head Coach Zach Goodrich. “Little River saw threes go in early whereas we struggled to put the ball in the hole and saw ourselves down quick.”

While the Eagles nearly kept the Redskins all-stater Jayden Garrison to half his game average with just 13 points, Trey Rolfs picked up the offense by drilling three three-pointers on his way to scoring 21 points. Braxton Lafferty chipped in with 11 and both Graham Stephens and Rylan Konen each scored eight.

With the defense keying on him, Garrison instead led Little River in assists by dishing out five while also grabbing four rebounds and making a pair of steals. Rolfs led the Redskins on the boards with five rebounds while Lafferty pulled down four.

For Elyria they only had one player reach double digits as Keyan Wiggers scored 12. Zach Stucky and Ben Unruh directed the offense with eight and five assists each while Wiggers topped the Eagles in rebounding with six.

Coach Goodrich concluded his reflections on the battle by adding, “It takes a lot of energy to come back, especially when you have to face a press most of the game. I was enormously proud of the way all our guys competed. We made too many mistakes down the stretch to keep the game close, but I felt we would walk away with some positives in how we competed. I was pleased with how Keyan (Wiggers) finished down low and I think if we compete like we did tonight in terms of effort and desire, we will be able to tally a few more wins in these last couple of games leading up to sub-state.”

The victory keeps Little River unbeaten at 17-0 as they now prep for a busy week when they host Spearville on Tuesday, host Goessel on Thursday and then finish up traveling to Inman on Friday.

With the loss, Elyria drops to 10-6 for the season. They will be back on the court Monday when they host Central Christian before making a trip to play Marion on Thursday.
