OLANDER, BOUGHFMAN LEAD LITTLE RIVER

PENNER, HAWKINSON LEADS ELYRIA CHRISTIAN

By William

ELYRIA – It was another strong defensive game for the Little River girls as they held the Elyria Christian girls to just 17% shooting from the field on their way to a 38-18 win.

“We played another great defensive game as we beat Elyria Christian,” explained Lady Redskin head coach Brent Clark. “A big win for us as we prepare for sub-state. I was very proud of these girls with the effort they are putting out. We are having fun and enjoying the success.”

Little River held a three-point, 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter before pushing the advantage out to 11 by the halftime break after holding Elyria to just two points in the second quarter.

After the Lady Eagles took one point off the deficit, the Lady Redskins put another 14 points in the scorebook in the final eight minutes to earn the final 20-point victory.

“This was most definitely a very rough night offensively for us,” pointed out Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “I knew that it was going to be tough to get a second win over Little River this season, and it would take a good shooting night for us to accomplish that. I thought we did a good job being patient against their zone and working the ball inside. We had a lot of good looks, but just could not make our shots.”

The Lady Redskins were led by super freshman Aubrey Olander and Lily Boughfman as Olander scored 14, made four steals and pulled down nine rebounds, just missing a double-double, while Boughfman put 13 points in the scorebook while dishing out five assists, blocked six shots and just missed a double-double as well with nine rebounds as well.

Not a single Lady Eagle reached double figures in the scorebook as Kylee Penner led the way with eight points. Penner also had four rebounds, a pair of steals and a blocked shot while Ryland Hawkinson scored four points, led the team in rebounds with five and made a pair of steals. Allie Stone topped the team on defense with five steals.

Elyria head coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “I was extremely proud of the effort our girls played with all night. Little River is not held below forty points very often, and our girls did a nice job taking away their outside shooting threats for the most part. We gave up some easy looks for them around the basket a few times, and they did a nice job of finishing those opportunities.”

The Lady Eagles are now 14-3 for the season and will return to the court (weather permitting) on Monday when they host Central Christian before finishing the week on Thursday with a game on the road at Marion.

Now 14-3 as well, the Lady Redskins have three games next week starting with hosting Spearville on Tuesday and Goessel on Thursday before going on the road Friday to Inman.
