NICKERSON – When the other team has a player that scores nearly as many points as your team does, it does not spell success and that is what happened to the Smoky Valley girls on Friday on the road at Nickerson in a 56-34 loss.

Playing the 4th ranked team in 4A, the Lady Panthers also had six-foot-two Ava Jones and she accounted for 27 points and 19 rebounds, one more rebound than the entire Lady Vikings had for the game.

Nickerson doubled up on Smoky Valley 12-6 by the end of the first quarter before pushing the lead out to 16 at 30-14 heading into the halftime break before cruising to the final 22-point victory over the Lady Vikings.

“The Lady Vikings were down by just six after the first quarter but the Lady Panthers went on a 16-0 run in the second quarter to open up a 16-point lead at halftime,” explained Lady Viking Head Coach Larry Van Der Wege. “We battled on both ends in the second half but were not able to ever mount a rally.”

Ellie Brumbaugh led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 13 thanks to connecting on three three-pointers while Adrian Hazelwood was next with six as eight girls put points by their name in the scorebook. Seven girls recorded at least a pair of rebounds while five made steals.

Looking in depth at the game, Van Der Wege concluded his reflections of it by adding, “Nickerson is quite a matchup challenge with (Ava) Jones on the inside and good shooting guards on the outside. We tried multiple defenses to try and contain them but did not have as much success as we had hoped. It was not from a lack of effort. Ellie (Brumbaugh) had a good night of shooting from beyond the arc and overall, out percentage shooting was improved. We had plenty of good looks in the first half but just could not get enough of them to fall, especially during the second quarter. At the same time, when we would get them to miss, Jones would get the rebound and put it back in. In the second half, we were more patient on offense and increased our defensive intensity. I could not be prouder of how we battled in the second half as the score just does not reflect how we played tonight.”

Now 10-7 for the season the Lady Vikings will return home on Tuesday to play Hoisington.
