3 RELAY TEAMS AND 6 INDIVIDUALS, + 1 VIKING SWIMMER

MCPHERSON – According to McPherson boys swim coach Matt Cotton, the Bullpups are indeed in a rare position in that they have qualified the entire team to swim at the Kansas Class 5-4-3-2-1A Swim Meet on Saturday, February 20 in Topeka.

Cotton explained that despite a couple of the Bullpup regular season relay teams qualified using co-op swimmers from Smoky Valley, the relay teams qualified based on time and not necessarily swimmers.

He pointed out that it means even the two newest swimmers Christian Garcia and Tito Mendez will get to swim at the state meet as a member of the 200 Medley Relay team.

In addition to the Bullpup swimmers, one of the co-op swimmers from Smoky Valley, Tytus Reed, will also be competing in the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 Freestyle. This will by Reed’s second straight trip to the state meet.

As for the Bullpups, all three relay teams have qualified as have six individual swimmers, all in two events.

“It is extremely exciting to have qualified so well with this crew,” said Coach Cotton. “To have seven swimmers competing in multiple individual events is a huge achievement for the program, especially with this year’s added restrictions that mean that all swimmers had to fall in the top 24 times submitted from all the schools in the states 5-1A.”

Regarding individual swimmers, Cotton continued by noting, “We also are fielding two competitive relays that will swim in the finals heat and while this is no guarantee for a top 8 medal finish this year, they will be in the running to swim directly against some of the fastest teams in the state where the margins at the top are razor thin. For Rhys Vanderhoof and Matthew Powers, who were both on the podium last year as part of the champion 200 Freestyle Relay and silver medal 400 Freestyle Relay teams, this is a chance to try to return to those top steps. We will need to swim our absolute best, but in there’s no telling what could happen once we are racing head-to-head.”

Coach Cotton concluded his pre-state reflections by saying, “There are some incredibly strong teams heading into this meet, and while we probably will not be able to repeat last year’s record high second-place finish, we are looking to make our mark in the midfield and our aim all season, has been a top five finish in the state meet. If we hit our taper well and have a good meet, we are hoping we can achieve that goal!”
