STONE, PETERS, PENNER, STARBURG LEAD LADY EAGLES
By William
MARION – It took defensive pressure to make offensive success in the second half which led to the Elyria Christian girls to a 37-20 win over Marion on the road on Thursday.
With Marion leading by three, 8-5, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles turned the tables on the scoreboard in the second quarter and went into the halftime break holding a slim, two-point advantage at 14-12.
Turning up the pressure defensively in the second half, Elyria held Marion to just three points in the third and five in the fourth while putting up 23 second half points themselves to gain the final 17-point victory.
“I thought that we did a nice job of turning defensive pressure into offense in the second half tonight,” explained Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “Marion is one of those teams that really makes me nervous because they have some good athletes and some good outside shooters, so if they get hot, they can put some points up quickly. Even though we fouled a little more than I would like, we kept them sped up and out of rhythm.”
One point of interest on the final stat sheet, the Lady Eagles had as many rebounds, 24, as they did steals on when playing defense. Elyria forced Marion into turning the ball over 27 times in the game.
Elyria was led on offense by Allie Stone with 10 points though both Kylee Penner and Olivia Peters just missed double figures with nine points each. Peters and KiLynn Starburg led the Lady Eagle work in the paint with five and four rebounds apiece, while Peters also recorded seven steals, while both Ryland Hawkinson and Starburg swiped five.
Coach Fields concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “I was happy with the way we took care of the ball and reduced our own turnovers tonight. Olivia Peters was outstanding on defense tonight with her seven steals while she also had the assignment of stopping their best player which she did on almost every possession. KiLynn (Starburg) and Ryland (Hawkinson) were also very active defensively while Allie (Stone) played hard on both sides of the court.”
Now 15-3 for the season, the Lady Eagles will host Berean Academy next Tuesday on senior night for Elyria.
