HAZELWOOD RECORDS DOUBLE-DOUBLE

By William

HAVEN – Despite a poor night of shooting and few points in the second quarter, the Smoky Valley girls were still able to record a 32-21 win on Friday on the road at Haven.

One good thing going for the Lady Vikings was that neither team had much success shooting as Smoky Valley shot just 23% from the field and the home folks, Haven, only connected on 18% of what shots they did take. The credit goes to the defense of both teams.

“It was a physical game with both defenses making points hard to come by,” explained Lady Viking head coach Larry Van Der Wege. “The Vikings went into the locker room down five at the half but came out with a good start in the third quarter. Between defense and rebounding, we did not give up a field goal in the second half as Haven only scored on three free throws.”

The Lady Vikings held a slim 10-8 lead at the end of the first quarter before Haven rang up 10 points in the second to take a five-point, 18-13, advantage into the halftime break. In the final two quarters though, Smoky Valley outscored Haven 19-3 with all three of Havens points coming at the charity stripe giving the Lady Vikings the final 11-point win.

Coach Van Der Wege concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “Haven came out and applied a lot of ball pressure and it affected us in the first half, so we discussed some offensive sets and adjustments at halftime and the girls came out and executed those changes. It enabled us to better take care of the ball and handle their pressure. It was a physical game so shooting percentages were not remarkably high but obviously we hit enough in the second half to win the game. I am most proud of our defensive effort and rebounding, in the second half we really shut down their inside game and then rebounded their misses to limit their second chances. We took a big step up in toughness tonight as Claire (Broxterman) and Breanna (Priddy) were very tough in the paint to limit their five-foot-eleven big to just eight points and only a handful of points. I also want to acknowledge the double-double by our freshman guard Adrian Hazelwood as I think it will be the first of many for her.”

The most glaring stat the stood in favor of Smoky Valley was rebounding as the Lady Vikings cleared out 34 rebounds to just 21 for Haven.

Adrian Hazelwood, just a freshman, had another outstanding night as she recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while also handing out a pair of assists, making a pair of three-pointers and blocking two shots.

It was a team victory as seven Lady Vikings recorded at least two points by their name in the scorebook, four blocked at least one shot, four made at least one steal and nine recorded rebounds.

Now 12-7 for the season, the Lady Vikings will finish out the regular season on Tuesday with Pratt coming to town.
