KAUFMAN, CHURCHILL LEAD MOUNDRIDGE

By William

ELBING – Normally when you shoot 45% from the field and connect on eight three-pointers, you would think a victory, unfortunately for the Moundridge boys they were still outgunned by Berean Academy and ended up losing a road trip to Elbing 59-48 on Friday.

Berean shot a blistering 59% from the field and was truly consistent on offense as they scored 13, 14, 15, and 17 points in each of the four quarters while the Wildcats scored 10, fell to just seven, 12, and 19 which brought the final score to favor Berean by 11. Berean also out scored the Wildcats 16-4 when coming off a turnover.

“Berean is a solid team,” noted Wildcat head coach Vance Unrau. “They have a franchise type player in Chase Weibe who had a complete game and makes everyone around him better.”

Weibe lead Berean with 22 points which included three three-pointers, plus he dished out four assists and made four steals while Austin Thiessen gave them a two-headed monster to deal with as he had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

For Moundridge, they were led by Landon Kaufman and Logan Churchill with 17 and 16 points between them. Churchill hit on four three-pointers while Kaufman made three. Jon Schlosser was the top Wildcat in the paint with seven rebounds and a blocked shot.

Coach Unrau concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “Our kids played hard but did not take advantage of scoring opportunities missing from high percentage areas and we have not realized that we are missing out on second chance scoring opportunities by crashing the offensive glass. We have a couple of big games coming up next week which will have a direct implication on our seeding in sub-state.”

The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-7 for the season as they prep for the final two games of their regular season which will determine their seeding in sub-state. Moundridge will close with two home games, hosting Sedgwick on Monday and Ell-Saline on Tuesday.
