By William

The McPherson Middle School 8th grade boys basketball teams hit a brief rough spot recently when they went 1-3 over four games.

On Thursday, February 11, both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams lost to Hutchinson with the ‘A’ team losing for just the third time this season, 54-27 while the ‘B’ team lost 38-20.

On Thursday, February 18, the ‘A’ team returned to the win column with a decisive 47-20 victory over Salina Lakewood while the ‘B’ team tumbled, losing to Lakewood 31-24.

The 8th grade Junior Pups ‘A’ team is now 8-3 for the season while the ‘B’ team is 3-8. They now enter the final week where they will tangle with Derby on Monday, Maize South on Tuesday and then finish the season on Thursday with Newton.

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS vs. Salina Lakewood, Thursday, February 18

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM:

SCORE = JUNIOR PUPS 47, Salina Lakewood 20

JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM SCORING: Gabe Pyle – 19; Bishop Brown – 16; Brenden Doile – 7; Brody Seidl – 3; Ian Razak – 2.

COACH TYLER BROWN’S REFLECTIONS:

“to start the game tonight it took us about ½ the first quarter to really get going offensively, but once the seal came off, we scored a bunch in a short amount of time and finished the first quarter with 14 points and continued that scoring into the second quarter when we scored 15 points to finish the first half with 29 points.”

“I was extremely pleased to see us come out attacking and be able to put up 29 points in 12 minutes means we were pretty efficient in the half. The other stat line that I was happy with was getting to the free throw line 18 times as a team.”

“I also felt our defense was solid tonight as well, holding them to six points in the first quarter, three points in the second quarter, five points in the third quarter and then six points in the final quarter was pretty darn good.”

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM:

SCORE: Salina Lakewood 31, JUNIOR PUPS 24

JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Jaxson Malvo – 16; Brenden Doile – 5; spencer Strecker – 2; Logan Peterson – 1.

COACH TJ JACKSON’S POST-GAME REFLECTIONS:

“I know it is tough to lose any time, but these guys have really improved. Last time we played Lakewood they beat us by over 20 points. The game was within one possession at the end and there is a lot to be proud of with that as we are playing far better defense in both man and zone, but we had a few breakdowns that we can learn from that hurt us late in the game.”

“Once again, (Brenden) Doile is really being a lift for the ‘B’ group and his leadership is helping those around him. When these guys work together it is obvious, they can keep themselves in any game they play hard in.”

8TH GRADE JUNIOR PUPS vs. HUTCHINSON, Thursday, February 11

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM:

SCORE: Hutchinson 54, JUNIOR PUPS 27

JUNIOR PUPS ‘A’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Gabe Pyle – 10; Carter Allen – 6; Ian Razak – 6; Bishop Brown – 5.

COAH TYLER BROWN’S POST-GAME REFLECTIONS:

“It is tough to even know what to say after a game like this. Games like this just make you feel sick afterwards. Coming off such a good game against Maize in all phases of it we went the other direction with Hutchinson. Don’t get me wrong, Hutchinson has a very talented 8th grade class, but they are not a 27-point team better than us. For whatever reason we had no answer tonight. They came out and punched us right in the mouth and we just took it the whole game.”

“We could not rebound, we struggled to score, and we couldn’t keep our man in front of us. I felt like we would get stops in our zone but when we would give them multiple offensive boards in the same possession or basically, they would just keep shooting until they scored when we were in the zone. We would get that initial stop in our zone defense, but I felt we had to get out of it at times because we couldn’t find a man to box out or just struggle to rebound when we were in a zone. If we went man-to-man, they would just blow right by us and then players were not in help positions to be able to help other teammates out. When they have four players in double digits, you know we struggled defensively.”

8th GRADE JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM:

SCORE: Hutchinson 38, JUNIOR PUPS 20

JUNIOR PUPS ‘B’ TEAM INDIVIDUAL SCORING: Jaxson Malvo – 13; Brenden Doile – 4; Kaven Byrd – 3.

COACH TJ JACKSON’S POST-GAME REFLECTIONS:

“Hutchinson is a talented group of kids. The boys worked hard, but there just was not much in our favor tonight. I am still proud of the boys as they always work hard and do everything they can to represent McPherson well. I have no doubt they will keep getting better.”
