SETTING NEW STANDARD FOR SMOKY VALLEY

By William

A new bar has been set for Smoky Valley athletes as the Vikings Tytus Reed not only represented the school for the first time at the Class 5-4-3-2-1A State Swim Meet, but he scored the first points ever for the team by finishing in the top 16 in the 500 Freestyle.

Just a sophomore, Reed competed during the regular season for the McPherson Bullpups in a co-op program, but that meant during any post-season meets he could only swim for his home school. Lucky for Reed, he had qualified for state in two events so was able to attend the state meet in Topeka to swim in both the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 Freestyle.

According to Bullpup coach Matt Cotton, Reed dropped seven seconds off his personal record in the 500 Freestyle to earn a time of 5:21.39 which was good for 16th place and one team point.

This came after a tight three-man race in his first heat, meaning he would have to post a time good enough to beat someone in both the next two heats if he hoped to sneak into the points rankings and he did, he swam a great race by holding back just enough to leave some in the tank to overtake two swimmers in the final sprint to the wall and take 16th and gaining the point for Smoky Valley.

In the 200 Individual Medley, Reed missed out on scoring points by just .07 seconds to fellow Bullpup Alex Houston, as Reed swam a 2:13.17 while Houston swam a 2:13.10. That blink of an eye kept Reed from scoring another point for Smoky Valley.

According to Bullpup coach Cotton, his regular season coach, “I could not be more impressed with this sophomore and the drive which he possesses. It has been our long-held goal since the start of the season to score points for Smoky Valley at stat and he did just that. I have a feeling that this will not be the last state points Smoky Valley sees in the next two years so long as he has any say about it.”

Congrats to the Tytus Reed and the future of Smoky Valley swimming.
