ELYRIA – Good defense by the visitors and poor shooting by the home team is what defined the Elyria boys game on Tuesday with Berean Academy as they stumbled and took a 47-26 loss at home.

Berean jumped out to a healthy 12-3 lead over the Eagles by the end of the first quarter and pushed it out to a 13-point, 21-8, advantage by the time the two teams reached the halftime break. Berean then built the deficit for Elyria to 22 points by the end of the third before the Eagles were able to play Berean even in the fourth, but it was too late, and they suffered the humbling 21-point defeat.

“We got exactly what we expected against Berean tonight,” pointed out Eagle head coach Zach Goodrich. “You know Berean will be fundamentally sound, good defensively, and they will not beat themselves. That is exactly what they exhibited tonight. We struggled to give effort for the full 32 minutes and you have to do that to stay with a team like the Warriors.”

Berean dominated the glass as they out rebounded the Eagles 35-25 while holding Elyria to just 26% shooting from the field as well.

Kaden Aroum led Elyria in scoring with 15 thanks to three three-pointers as only four Eagles put points on the scoreboard for the game.

Nine Eagles recorded at least one rebound with Aroum and Keyan Wiggers each leading the team with four each, while Wigger did get some defensive shots in with three blocked shots.

Coach Goodrich concluded his reflections on the game by adding, “Once we learn what it means to compete and not just play hard on certain possessions, we will be able to play with teams like Berean. I was extremely proud of Kaden (Aroum) and the effort and desire he showed tonight. He led us in scoring with 15 and while not much was going right for us, he never stopped trying and made little plays that gave us sparks when we needed it. If others will follow his lead, we will be solid moving into postseason next week.”

Now 11-7 for the season, the Eagles will travel to Little River to play the top ranked Redskins to close out the regular season before hitting substate next week where they have a first game bye before playing the winner of a game with Hartford and Chase next Friday, March 5.
