BOUGHFMAN, RENKEN, OLANDER LEAD LITTLE RIVER
HAWKINSON LEADS LADY EAGLES
By William
LITTLE RIVER – This time around the Little River girls had to fight for a win on Thursday in a rematch with Elyria Christian at home, winning 39-30.
Just two weeks earlier, the Lady Redskins humbled the Lady Eagles by 20, not tonight as Elyria powered out to a 10-0 to start the game only to see Little River come back to take a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Eagles bounced back and was able to take a slim one-point advantage, 18-17, heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, Little River put a small cushion between the two teams with a four-point, 25-21 lead before pushing their advantage late in the game to the final nine-point victory.
“We won a hard-fought game,” noted Little River head coach Brent Clark. “I thought Elyria had a great game plan for us as the game was back and forth until late in the fourth quarter. Coach Fields does a great job.”
As for Elyria, head coach Greg Fields pointed out, “Great effort by our girls tonight. We got off to a good start and made some shots to start the game with a 10-0 run. We cooled off offensively after that, but I thought our defense was pretty consistent throughout the game.”
Neither team held a large advantage on the stat sheet as both struggled with hanging on to the ball with Little River recording 19 turnovers and Elyria had 17 miscues. Elyria did have a sizable advantage in steals with 18 to just eight for the Lady Redskins, though the Lady Eagles committed 15 fouls to just five for Little River.
Lady Redskin coach Clark concluded his brief reflections on the game by adding, “We struggled both offensively and defensively the first four minutes of the game. Lily (Boughfman) had a great second half to help us pull off the victory. We have to get our turnover situation corrected if we want to have a good post season.”
For Little River, Lily Boughfman and MeKenzie Renken led the offense with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Aubrey Olander nearly had a double-double with eight points and a team leading 10 rebounds while Elaina Eck may have only scored a single point, but she dished out four assists, grabbed four rebounds and made a pair of steals.
The Lady Redskins are now 17-3 for the season as they now have a week to prepare for post season with a first-round bye, meaning they do not play until Thursday, March 4 when they play the winner of a game between Lincoln and Goessel.
Ryland Hawkinson had a huge game for the Lady Eagles with 13 points, a team leading five rebounds, a steal and a pair of blocked shots. KiLynn Starburg, Allie Stone, Kylee Penner and Olivia Peters led a stout Elyria defense as they accounted for 14 of the 18 steals the team recorded.
Lady Eagle coach Fields finished his post-game reflections by saying, “We took twelve incredibly open three’s tonight and only connected on one. I felt like the girls did everything we asked of them, but we just could not quite see the ball into the basket. This week was a great preparation for us going into the post season. I was extremely proud of how our girls competed both against Little River tonight and Berean Academy on Tuesday.”
For the Lady Eagles, they are now 15-5 for the season and have a bye in the first round of substate for Class 1A Division II. Elyria will play Thursday, March 4 against the winner of a game between Centre and Chase.
